Final Day of Eyeglass Clinic

 Today was our last day of the eyeglass clinic. We served 49 people. It was a long week, but we had a wonderful experience, sharing stories with our translators and each other, as well as ministering to a warm and welcoming community. Saying farewell was bittersweet. 







As we said our goodbyes to our friends at the church, there were hugs, laughter and tears. Please pray for this church and school that it may flourish under God’s loving care.

Well, during our time here, we saw so many completely decorated buses!  Some had flashing lights like a disco, some had lots of chrome, and one had light up eyeballs like this one:)  Several have railings on top for crates that hold produce and livestock, such as chickens, so they are called chicken buses.

So, we found out that these are the public transit buses for the general public’s use.  Most folks walk, take buses, or ride motorcycles in the area we were serving.  These buses came from the United States.  They are school buses that are no longer in service in our country due to safety regulation changes.  the Guatemalan government buys them and they convoy through Mexico into Guatemala where they are fixed up and are ready for a new life.  






Tomorrow is our last day in Guatemala and we have plans to visit some cultural locations.  We played another evening of Werewolf before bed and it was a lot of fun just to unwind.

 Our team started the day with a fabulous breakfast made by our host.  There were even healthy shots set out for us!  We began with a devotion and prayer requests.  It is so peaceful having breakfast outdoors with all the vegetation. The guesthouse is beautiful. The ride to the church was filled with scenery that took our breath away.  Lush mountains that rival the Rockies in altitude, and architecture that has a distinct Spanish presence.  This is the church and school where we are having the eye clinic.   We served 104 people with the need for eyeglasses.  We had translators that helped, as well as a pastor, who was very friendly and guided people with spiritual counseling before they had their exams. We had five stations that the people went through before they left, and each person received a bottle to make saline eye drops and a pair of sunglasses, along with any prescription glasses that they tested for.   We had dinner on the road at a...

Final Preparation and Commissioning

Blessings to all! Sunday was a busy day for the team, in a good way:) It started with being officially commissioned by Pastor to go forth in God’s name and serve in the mission field. After the service, the mission team headed to MOST Ministries, where lunch was provided by our team leader.  Next came the final Bible study and then suitcases were filled with eyeglasses and all of the related supplies. Each of us will have a full sized piece of luggage with close to 50 pounds of materials, along with our personal and carryon bags. That’s a lot of luggage!  We are now working on final preparation such as personal packing and filling out our travel documents, so that we can be ready to head out. Church Day!

 Sunday blessings to all! This morning we dressed in our Sunday clothes and headed to San Miguel Dueñas, where the church that we have our clinic is. Before the church service, we walked to the town square to view the Catholic Church processional celebrating their patron saint, Juan Santiago. There were mortars going off, and there were flower strewn on the streets for the processional.  The procession was a somber event with many people walking together holding candles and the priest being carried along with them. Afterward, we attended a church service at our host church and the ladies made us a wonderful lunch.  The team did a half day clinic today, as we had time after the service. Until this afternoon, the weather has been very mild and pleasant. Right after we started the clinic, there was a downpour that lasted over two hours, with lots of thunder and lightning.  We had a small crowd, but all were served!
