Eyeglass Clinic Day One

 Our team started the day with a fabulous breakfast made by our host.  There were even healthy shots set out for us!  We began with a devotion and prayer requests.  It is so peaceful having breakfast outdoors with all the vegetation. The guesthouse is beautiful.










The ride to the church was filled with scenery that took our breath away.  Lush mountains that rival the Rockies in altitude, and architecture that has a distinct Spanish presence. 






This is the church and school where we are having the eye clinic.  






We served 104 people with the need for eyeglasses.  We had translators that helped, as well as a pastor, who was very friendly and guided people with spiritual counseling before they had their exams. We had five stations that the people went through before they left, and each person received a bottle to make saline eye drops and a pair of sunglasses, along with any prescription glasses that they tested for.  






We had dinner on the road at and it was pretty cool with outdoor activities and music. It was a good way to unwind after our first day.



We came back to the guesthouse and had a late night meeting to recap the day’s activities, along with a devotion, and since folks were exhausted they went to bed fairly early.  While typing last night’s blog, Paul and I noticed that our host had a poster of when she used to be a professional flamenco dancer!


 Tomorrow is day two of our clinic and the plan includes having some school kids get eye exams.  We will go into more detail about the specific causes of chronic eye issues for this population.

Final Preparation and Commissioning

Blessings to all! Sunday was a busy day for the team, in a good way:) It started with being officially commissioned by Pastor to go forth in God’s name and serve in the mission field. After the service, the mission team headed to MOST Ministries, where lunch was provided by our team leader.  Next came the final Bible study and then suitcases were filled with eyeglasses and all of the related supplies. Each of us will have a full sized piece of luggage with close to 50 pounds of materials, along with our personal and carryon bags. That’s a lot of luggage!  We are now working on final preparation such as personal packing and filling out our travel documents, so that we can be ready to head out. Lord, thank you for the opportunity serve You by serving those who are in need both physically and spiritually. Guatemala or Bust!

 Hello! The team arrived at the airport very early and our flight took off at 5:30 am!  There was a layover in Chicago, so several of us had breakfast together.  Carol was showing off her creative skills with a bagel flower!     We arrived in Guatemala City around 1:00 pm mountain time and were met by our host Nury and her grandson. Nury has been hosting mission team for many years with a true servant’s heart. We drove through Guatemala City and it was so busy! We saw remnants of Mayan aqueducts that were built thousands of years ago, and the Spanish later added to.  Our host told us that approximately 5 million people moved around the area at that time of day! We saw so many interesting things during the drive out of the city.  A quick lunch break at a local chicken chain.
